Samsung's Galaxy Nexus is the current 'hero' Android smartphone that natively runs the pure Android (i.e. no laggy overlays) Google's latest software. Relatively slim and with a slightly curved design, the Galaxy Nexus' plastic enclosure and light weight begs to be protected from sudden drops and the harsh realities of everyday life. Here are three cases that can protect the Galaxy Nexus in varying degrees.
Case Mate's Barely There Case for the Galaxy Nexus
By most accounts, the Galaxy Nexus is a beautiful smartphone but it's plastic finish isn't the best for providing good grip. I wanted a case that didn't add too much bulk to the device but that could still protect it from accidental scratches while in my pocket or when placed in various surfaces.
Case Mate's Barely There Case, available in black or purple for around $26.00 is a simple snap-on case that covers the entire back of the Galaxy Nexus leaving the screen and the various buttons and ports accessible.
This is the case I keep coming back to for everyday use. It is low-profile, it blends nicely with the Galaxy Nexus' thin design and it doesn't detract from the device's functionality. I like that the matte finish on the plastic is resistant to collecting dust and installation and removal are quick and easy. Basic but functional, the Case Mate Barely There case works as advertised.

Commuter Series Case by OtterBox
The Otterbox Commuter Series Case for the Galaxy Nexus ($35.00) offers the best middle ground between complete protection and a lightweight case that doesn't bulk up the Galaxy Nexus.
This solution comes in three parts. An adhesive screen protector, a silicone skin that wraps around the Galaxy Nexus like a wetsuit and a tough polycarbonate shell that covers the rear and the sides of the phone.
This ensemble still manages to keep the Galaxy Nexus reasonably thin but it now feels much more robust and definitely has a better chance of surviving accidental drops. The exterior shell is tough and scratchproof while the silicone skin serve to soak up the bumps and also covers most of the open ports from moisture.
This is the case I am most likely to recommed to Galaxy Nexus owners, it isn't as slim as the Case Mate but it clearly offers two to three times the protection at a great price. Best of all, you get Otterbox's commitment to quality and a solution that will keep the Galaxy Nexus covered and protected at all times.
My ownly quibble, and it is a small one, is that the silicone skin does attract dust and pocket lint so OCD folks like myself will be constantly cleaning and wiping some areas but this doesn't affect the way it protects the phone.

Defender Series by Otterbox
Those needing the ultimate protection for the Galaxy Nexus should consider the Defender Series from Otterbox $50.00 which offers three layers of protection and a belt-holster. The Defender series has always represented the ultimate in smartphone and tablet protection.
As Otterbox explains, "The Defender Series for Samsung Galaxy Nexus thoroughly covers this phone with practically indestructible protection. Made of a hard plastic inner layer with a built-in screen protector and a durable silicone outer layer this case is made to take abuse."
The Defender case completely encases the Galaxy Nexus. If features a clear protective membrane on touch screen, a super tough polycarbonate shell and a durable silicone skin.
Another big feature of the Defender series is the belt holster that allows you to simply pop-in the smartphone securely. For users who want or need to carry their smartphone on their belts. This is the case for the extreme sports enthusiast, the outdoor-inclined and field workers as well as anyone who wants to provide the utmost protection for their device.
