As expected, the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus opening weekend broke sales records for Apple. The company is saying that 10 million units were sold over the first three days that the new devices were offered.

"Sales for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded our expectations for the launch weekend, and we couldn't be happier," said Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook. "We would like to thank all of our customers for making this our best launch ever, shattering all previous sell-through records by a large margin. While our team managed the manufacturing ramp better than ever before, we could have sold many more iPhones with greater supply and we are working hard to fill orders as quickly as possible."

And yet, there's still a large unfulfilled demand for the larger iPhone 6 Plus which was sold out in mere minutes at the Apple Retail Store at the Eaton Centre where we observed the launch proceedings. As with many other locations the turnout of buyers at our location was staggering, taking almost three entire floors of the massive mall.

By the looks of it, momentum is just going to continue to build. Various pre-orders are in queue and people are waiting 3-6 weeks to receive their new iPhones. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus went on sale last Friday in the U.S., Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the U.K.

The new phones are  scheduled to go on sale in 20 additional countries this Friday, Sept. 26, which would be before the end of the company's September quarter. iOS 8, the latest OS that ships with iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus was also made available last week and brings a variety of new features and functionality to older iPhones and iPads. All of this interest in Apple's devices and software could rally a surge in popularity for Apple's devices and solutions.

Last year's sales for the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s was pegged at 9 million units for the opening weekend.
