Looks like MacBooks are getting refreshed this year, with one of them getting desktop-class specs—at least according to the new research note from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. According to Kuo, there will be 12-inch MacBook models running on Intel Kaby Lake processors entering production in early second quarter. There will supposedly be a 16GB RAM option for this lineup, which could be a high-end version or one of the built-to-order configurations. At the moment 12-inch MacBooks have only up to 8GB of RAM.
New 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pro models are also getting Kaby Lake processors and will reportedly start production in the early third quarter of the year, which is in July. While not specified in the research note, RAM might still be at 16GB due to current memory design restrictions.
However, there seems to be an upcoming “15-inch MacBook” model that will have 32GB of RAM and will enter mass production in the early fourth quarter. According to Kuo, this will be “the most significantly redesigned product this year” and will carry the desktop-class RAM to satisfy high-end power users. It could also be classified as part of the MacBook Pro lineup.
Aside from the faster processors and memory boost, there doesn’t seem to be any changes in terms of design and other specs of the notebooks in relation to models released last year. He doesn’t mention release dates either but has said before the new MacBook Pro with 32GB of RAM will launch in the second half of the year.
