Dyson is amping up the luxury of its Supersonic hair dryer with a new 23.75 karat gold edition.
On September 4, Dyson is releasing the Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer 23.75 karat gold, bringing together precision engineering and meticulous craftsmanship. Designed by James Dyson, every cap is hand gilt in 23.75 karat gold.
Building on our obsession with materials and engineering, Dyson design engineers and model makers first learned the skills for gilding under a master guilder. A red loop beneath the gold leaf reflects the same traditional gilding techniques used on artwork, sculptures and other artefacts. This is the ultimate implement for the master hairdresser.
The red colour is intended to reveal some of its colour over time, giving each gold-leafed face a distinctive patina. Before applying the gold leaf, an adhesive called ‘size’ is sprayed onto the surface of the red loop. The thickness, spread and drying time of size must be carefully controlled. Dyson engineers identified the most consistent method of application to ensure a unique and unblemished finished for each gold face. Following a meticulous selection process, each gold leaf at just 333 atoms thick,1/350th the diameter of human hair, is applied by hand.
