Canon is gearing up to take on its Japanese rivals with its first full-frame mirrorless camera and lens system. The Canon EOS R features a 30.3-megapixel full-frame sensor with a 100-40,000 ISO range. Its sensor makes use of dual-pixel autofocus with 5,655 manually selectable AF points and Canon pairs this with its DIGIC 8 image processor. It can shoot stills up to 8fps and record 4K video at 30fps. It also has both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. The camera itself is also dust- and weather-resistant.
The Japanese camera maker changes up its control scheme in a number of ways. One is there is now a sliding left-right control bar on the back of the camera, which you can use for different features. Another is the new lens system now have dedicated control rings as well as dials for zooming and manual focus. The EOS R also has a fully articulated touchscreen, OLED electronic viewfinder, as well as information panel on top of the camera.
The first EOS R lenses include a 24-105mm f/4 L, a 50mm f/1.2mm L, a 28-70mm f/2 L, and a 35mm f/1.8 macro lens. Canon will also be launching three lens mount adapters for EOS SLR lenses, which include one with the EOS R control ring and another that can be used with drop-in filters. If it tickles your fancy, the EOS R will retail for US$2,299 body only or $3,399 with the 24-105mm lens in late October. According to The Verge, preorders start on September 12th.
