CES 2019: LG to bring rollable OLED TV to market

LG has been playing around with rollable OLED displays for awhile now. It showed a prototype of this TV at last year’s CES. But now it’s going to be a sold to the public at the second half of the year. Called the Signature Series OLED TV R. This comes with a 65-inch display, which hides away in a credenza-like box that also houses the Dolby Atmos sound system. It’s a TV for those with really deep pockets (no price yet but expect it to be extremely expensive) that have a view they’d like to show off to their guests or those who just don’t want to be staring at a black screen when it’s off.

There are different modes for this TV. You get the full height when you turn it on, but there’s also a mode where it rolls up and lets you watch 21:9 ultra-widescreen movies sans the letterbox bars. There’s also a “line view” mode where you only see a quarter of the screen and displays a special home page that can show everything from the clock with weather, personal photos, music, or LG’s Home Dashboard to control your other smart home devices. You can hide the screen completely and just play music through its powerful speakers. The sound system can interface with your phone via Bluetooth.

With mechanical parts like these, you’re left wondering what the durability is going to be like. LG claims it’s tested the TV to 50,000 rolls up and down. As CNET notes, this amounts to 17 years if you turn it on and off eight times a day. Whether this TV gets extended or additional warranty for these parts isn’t determined at the moment.
