So, it’s happened. Samsung will not be launching the Galaxy Fold on April 26 in the US. The company announced on Monday that it’ll be delaying the sale date to a later one, which they will announce “in the coming weeks.” According to Samsung’s statement, “Initial findings from the inspection of reported issues on the display showed that they could be associated with impact on the top and bottom exposed areas of the hinge. There was also an instance where substances found inside the device affected the display performance. To fully evaluate this feedback and run further internal tests, we have decided to delay the release of the Galaxy Fold.”
Samsung sent out the email you see above to users who pre-ordered the device. They will not be charging the credit cards of those who pre-ordered until it ships and they’re giving the buyers an out if they want to cancel their pre-orders. Last week, the launch of the phone in some areas were delayed, prompting rumours that it would happen in the US as well. Now, we get an official word from the company.
The Galaxy Fold has been beleaguered by issues, which journalists and reviewers in North America noticed a couple of days in with the device. Some found that peeling the plastic film off the inside screen would brick the device. Others found that a bulge under the screen. And another had the left half of the Galaxy Fold just conk out on them.
In response to these issues, Samsung said, "While many reviewers shared with us the vast potential they see, some also showed us how the device needs further improvements that could ensure the best possible user experience. We will take measures to strengthen the display protection. We will also enhance the guidance on care and use of the display including the protective layer so that our customers get the most out of their Galaxy Fold.”
