We already knew that the Fossil Gen 5 is coming, and now we get more details about the smartwatch. And one of the new features is its ability to let you listen to and answer iPhone calls right from the watch. This feature has been available for a while on Android already. But we believe this is the first time Wear OS is offering this for iPhone users. It isn't available at launch, though. It'll arrive via a proprietary app launching in the fall. According to a Fossil spokesperson, "No action is required from your iPhone. The watch becomes another way to take your call via Bluetooth." If you're looking for iMessage support, that still isn't available right now.
All of the specs that were leaked recently were right. But we're here to share additional details we didn't get to share. The smartwatch has 1GB of RAM, NFC, and built-in GPS. And it's waterproof up to a depth of 30 metres.
Battery life is another important feature here with new modes designed to allow for multiple days of use. One is the Extended Battery Mode, which allows for multiday battery life while keeping notifications and heart rate monitoring active. There's also the Time-Only Mode, which displays just the time. This can be activated when the battery is running low or when you want to avoid distractions. Fossil didn't specify how long the battery will last in this mode. And then there's the Daily Mode, which enables everything including the always-on display.
The Fossil Gen 5 comes in six colour options. Three of them are under the "Julianna HR" moniker. These are the flashier models with a golden ring surrounding the watchface. The other three are under the Carlyle HR name, which has a more muted look. Both have the same overall look and dimensions, including a 1.28-inch AMOLED display. This is inside a 44mm case that's 12mm thick. Every Gen 5 watch is compatible with 22mm straps. The Fossil Gen 5 is priced at US$295 each (around CA$390).
