There have been bits and pieces of information about Samsung's Bluetooth tracker that have been surfacing online. GSMArena has gathered the pertinent info about the Galaxy Smart Tag, which carries an official model name of EI-T5300. According to the South Korean certification authority, it will run on a single, replaceable 3V CR2032 button cell. A rough translation from Samsung states: "Smart Tag which has button for find phone and loud," which is similar to what Tile offers with its smart trackers.
The Galaxy Smart Tag will reportedly be compatible with the company's recent SmartThingsFind feature. But we don't have a clear picture yet of how its tracking, positioning, and reporting will be achieved. The EI-T5300 is only certified for Bluetooth LE, which means it won't get the more advanced features like UWB, LTE, and/or GPS. But it is certified for Bluetooth 5.1, which is an update to the communication tech that focuses on signal direction functionality and is designed to power indoor navigation and tracking tags. So, Samsung will be fully utilizing its "next-gen" positioning, which theoretically offers 400m indoors and 1,000m outdoors while consuming minimal power.
The Galaxy Smart Tag will reportedly come in two colour options: black and oatmeal. Pricing is said to be around EUR 15 to 20 (around CA$23 to $31). And it's expected to debut alongside the Galaxy S21 series reportedly launching on January 14.
