TikTok might be experimenting with longer videos. Social media consultant Matt Navarra shared on Twitter a screenshot of an update giving him the option to record videos up to three minutes in length.

Right now, TikTok allows its users to record up to a minute in length, which has proven successful for the social network.

As The Verge points out, switching to a three-minute format will make it more in line with YouTube's earlier days, where videos were shorter than 10 minutes. You can do a lot more in three minutes, allowing for things like trailers or even short tutorials that often live on YouTube.

Is this TikTok's attempt to take on the streaming giant? Or do they want to take the place of the short-lived Quibi service?

TikTok won't be the first platform to change its core feature. Twitter drew a lot of flak when it doubled the length of tweets from 140 to 280 characters, but people seem to be okay with it now.
