It took a bit longer than Microsoft hoped for but there are now finally 1 billion installs of Windows 10 on PCs, XBox consoles, Hololens devices, and more. This comes at a time when support for the enduring yet outdated Windows 7 comes to a close and as Microsoft builds out its plan for the future of their OS.

"One in every seven people on the planet are planning, creating, ideating, executing, moving, shaking and doing great things with Windows 10," Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of modern life, search and devices at Microsoft, said Monday in a blog post.

Windows 10 has evolved steadily as an OS that captured various elements and postures of the elegant but doomed Windows Mobile OS. As an evolution of Windows 8 which was a touch-first operating system that ushered in 2-in-1 devices and pen input on PCs. As Microsoft's OS reaches this milestone, it might not be long before we see the future of Windows 10 as it is applied to multi-screen and foldable devices as well as ARM processor-powered computers.
