After postponing the event, Sony has officially unveiled its next-generation console, the PlayStation 5. And like the Microsoft Xbox Series X, it'll be hitting stores this holiday season.

Sony opted to go light and bright with the PS5 with a mostly white casing sandwiching a black center with blue accents. Its DualSense controller matches the colour scheme of the console itself. And similar to the PC tower-like Microsoft console, you can position the PS5 vertically. It looks like the front of the device houses a standard USB-A and USB-C ports with blue LED lights and vents seen at the top curve of the console. We don't know what it looks like from behind, though.

It will come in two variants: one with a 4K Blu-ray drive and another that skips out on this and is aptly called the Digital Edition. Not only will this mean it'll be less bulky and users will no longer have to deal with disc errors, but it could mean that it'll be cheaper, too. Sony hasn't officially released the price yet.

The PS5 is powered by an octa-core AMD Zen 2 processor paired with custom RDNA 2-based GPU, which promises to deliver 10.28 teraflops of computing power. This machine can support up to 8K graphics and 4K at a 120Hz refresh rate. It'll come with a proprietary SSD that has 825GB of storage and can transfer 5GB/s, which helps improve game load times.

As for the games it'll support, Sony says it works with an "overwhelming majority" of over 4,000 PS4 titles available today. And these games might benefit from higher refresh rates and resolutions courtesy of the new hardware.

It'll support new accessories like a charging station for the controllers, wireless headphones, media remote for using the console as a streaming box/Blu-Ray player, and an HD camera for motion tracking. There is no word yet when Sony plans to launch these peripherals.
