With more people using videoconferencing tools and apps because of the COVID-19 pandemic, companies have had to improve features to make their offerings more attractive to users. And so Google Duo takes cues from competitor Zoom by offering invite links on mobile.
While Google now offers its more business-oriented, desktop-geared Google Meet offering to consumers, the company also needed to pay attention to Duo, which is the more mobile-friendly, consumer-focused videoconferencing app.
For those who want to add more people into a Duo call they've made, you can use the invite link. It's being pushed through a server-side update, so there's nothing you need to do from your end. It also only works on mobile for now (both Android and iOS), unless you have a Chromebook that supports the Android version of Google Duo.
Introducing invite links is part of Google's plan to roll out more features, including web support and family mode. Web support is still in the works, while the Family mode is already live. The latter introduces features like onscreen doodling and Snapchat-like mask effects.
Google Duo also improves call quality with support for the new AV1 codec. And it now supports up to 12 people on a video call.
