After a very rocky start, Samsung has been taking notes and steadily improving its foldable devices. The new Galaxy Z Fold 2 is a testament to this promise. It now comes with bigger displays and a hideaway hinge that's even better than the one on the Galaxy Z Flip.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 has a bigger Cover screen (its external display) at 6.2 inches with a 2,260 x 816 resolution. The Super AMOLED screen now covers the entire front of the device. It comes at a tall 25:9 aspect ratio, an improvement from the bezel-ridden 4.6-inch screen of the previous generation foldable.

Inside, the main screen is bigger, too, at 7.6 inches with a 2,208 x 1,768 resolution. The Dynamic AMOLED screen has a 22.5:18 aspect ratio and an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate. It also now incorporates Ultra Thin Glass for better image quality and feel.

With the hinge in its third iteration, Samsung's Hideaway hinge includes a CAM mechanism to allow the Galaxy Z Fold 2 to stand on its own from 75 to 115 degrees. It also has the sweeper structure in the gap seen first on the Galaxy Z Flip 5G that keeps dust and particles out and prevents damage over time. The opening is even smaller here than on the Z Flip.

When you use the foldable device in Flex Mode, certain apps are viewable in Split mode, including the camera, video call user interface, gallery, calendar, and partner apps like YouTube. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 can recognize the primary display and show actionable content on the other part of the screen, allowing you to prop up the device on a table and work or play without having to cradle it in your handles.

This foldable device supports App Continuity, which promises ease of switching between the front display and the inner main panel. You can drag and drop files between Microsoft apps like Excel and PowerPoint. The entire Office suite is optimized to the Galaxy Z Fold 2's display with its partnership with the software giant.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 has a triple camera setup on the one non-screen side, which includes a primary 12-megapixel f/1.8 sensor with dual pixel autofocus, optical image stabilization, and 1.8µm-sized pixels; a 12-megapixel telephoto camera with 2x zoom, 1.0µm pixels and an optically-stabilized f/2.4 lens; as well as a 12-megapixel f/2.2 ultrawide sensor with 1.12µm pixels and a 12mm angle of view.

There are another two selfie cameras on the Galaxy Z Fold 2. One is a 10-megapixel f/2.2 1.22µm lens punched into the Cover screen and another 10-megapixel f/2.2 1.22µm inside the right half of the folding primary display. The Cover screen can serve as a viewfinder as you take a selfie with any of the three primary cameras at the back.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+ processor with 12GB of RAM; 256GB UFS 3.1 internal storage; and 4,500mAh battery that supports 25W wired charging, fast wireless charging, and wireless PowerShare.

It also supports both mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G. Like the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, it has Ultra-Wideband support for spatial awareness connectivity, which will let you send files quickly to other Android devices.

Canada is one of the countries to get a customizable hinge, which comes in Metallic Silver, Metallic Red, Metallic Blue, and Metallic Gold. The device itself comes in Mystic Black and Mystic Bronze.

Pre-orders are available through Samsung exclusively, starting today, September 1, until September 17. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 will be released on September 18 with a price tag of $2,779.
