Apple is taking on services like Peloton with its new fitness service called Fitness+. Canada is one of the first few countries gaining access to Fitness+, which offers different workouts guided by "world-class" trainers. Since Apple makes both the hardware and software, Fitness+ is evidence of how deep integration between its services works.
It adds metrics from your Apple Watch to the device playing your Fitness+ workout, which means you can see your heart rate, calories burned, and the like without having to glance at your wrist. It will even alert you on the screen if you completed a Fitness Ring. The service is accessible through the Fitness app on the iPhone as well as through the new Fitness apps on the iPad and Apple TV. Fitness+ also integrates with Apple Music, allowing users to access and save playlists used during their workouts.
Apple promises to add workouts weekly. It currently supports exercises like yoga, treadmill run, treadmill walk, rowing, core, strength, cycling, dance, and mindful cooldown. It can work with or without equipment, and Apple emphasizes that it is accessible to all kinds of users. A beginner program is available in the app for newbies or those who haven't exercised in a long time.
Apple also offers workout recommendations to users, which it promises is powered by on-device intelligence. The company wants to emphasize that it'll keep your data safe. Apple said in its press release, "When using Fitness+, all workout data is saved to the Health app on iPhone, and neither calories nor the workouts and trainers users choose will be stored along with their Apple ID."
In Canada, Apple Fitness+ will cost $12.99/month or $99.99/year. The service can be shared with up to five other family members through Apple's Family Sharing plan. And it comes with a free 30-day trial. If you buy a new Apple Watch (Series 3 or later, including the new Apple Watch SE and Series 6), Apple will offer a three-month trial of Fitness+ for free. This offer will be available for "a limited time." Fitness+ requires Apple Watch Series 3 or later paired with iPhone 6s or later or iPhone SE.
