Google has signed an agreement with eight Canadian publishers for its News Showcase program. This agreement will let Google license their content while paying the news organizations for curated stories and high-quality journalism. It will allow Google users to access some paywalled stories for free. Those who signed on include The Globe and Mail, Black Press Media, Narcity Media, Glacier Media, Winnipeg Free Press, Métro Média, Village Media, and SaltWire Network. The publishers represent over 70 national, regional, and community news groups in English and French.

The company also wants to expand its investment in Canadian journalism with the Google News Initiative. Google plans to train over 5,000 Canadian journalists and journalism students over the next three years.
