For the first time, Chinese tech company Xiaomi has overtaken Apple in the global smartphone shipments ranking for the second quarter of 2021 with 17% of the market share. According to Canalys research, smartphone shipments grew 12% last quarter as COVID-19 vaccination programs are happening worldwide.
Samsung remains in the top spot with 19% of the market share, with Apple now in third with 14% and OPPO and Vivo in fourth and fifth, respectively, at 10% market share each. Xiaomi had the most significant growth in the last quarter, with an 83% increase in sales. Samsung recorded a 15% increase and Apple a 1% improvement.
Xiaomi's growth is attributed to an over 300% increase in sales in Latin America and 150% growth in Africa. The company offers products that cost 40% and 75% cheaper than Samsung and Apple, respectively, making them more popular in emerging countries.
