Google has been taking a different approach to its smartphone announcements. This year, the company is showing off the upcoming Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro months before their launch, with the two new devices running on Google's first-ever smartphone chip—the Google Tensor. The processor focuses on aspects that Google does best: AI and machine learning. The company plans to improve the camera, voice commands, translation, captioning, and dictation on these phones.
The Pro variant will come equipped with three rear cameras, while the regular Pixel 6 gets two, meaning it misses out on a telephoto lens. The front-facing camera is now at the top center of the phone. The smaller Pixel 6 gets a 6.4-inch display with a 90Hz refresh rate, while the Pixel 6 Pro gets a 6.7-inch screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. Of course, these devices will launch with Google's new Material You design.
What Google doesn't want to show off yet are sample images from the phone, which The Next Web pointed out could mean they are cooking up something new in that space.
For now, The Verge's Dieter Bohn summarised this teaser in the best way. "Google is actually, finally trying to make a competitive flagship phone."
