Apple Stores and authorized service providers will no longer repair iPhones that have been reported as missing through the GSMA device registry. According to an internal memo obtained by MacRumors, the company will require repair technicians to deny users repair if they receive notice that the device is marked missing in the MobileGenius or GSX systems.
The GSMA device registry is a database containing device serial numbers and information about their status. So, if someone reports a phone stolen, authorities could flag this through GSMA. It allows repair providers to identify if a device they're servicing has been reported missing.
If this new policy takes into effect, it builds on existing rules that prevent technicians from removing a device's Activation Lock unless customers can prove they bought it. Apple also refuses to repair devices put in Lost Mode in the Find My app. This mode locks the device and displays contact information on the lock screen.
