TCL continues to build on its augmented reality glasses ambition. The new pair it showed off at CES 2023 still isn't as "subtle" as it claims. But for now, the TCL RayNeo X2 AR isn't being made for consumers anyway. It's still a developer platform meant to grow over time as the tech gets better. TCL wants to recruit developers to prepare for its eventual release, with the dev kit being offered to software makers "in select regions" by the end of the first quarter.

The TCL glasses run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 platform, which powers the Meta Quest 2 VR. Its MicroLED display has an impressive 100,000:1 contrast ratio and can reach a brightness of 1,000 nits. TCL plans to support prescription inserts for those who want to use them as regular glasses.

TCL envisions the RayNeo X2 working similar to Google Glass. It gets features like "smart GPS" navigation for simultaneous localization and mapping, so it can overlay virtual directions while showcasing nearby landmarks. It can deliver on-screen call and message pop-ups as well as offer real-time, in-person translation. It can also play music quietly and have a built-in camera for capturing first-person videos, stills, and time-lapse photos.
