Google Domains, a service that lets people easily create websites, is shutting down. Website builder and hosting provider Squarespace has announced that it will take over about 10 million domains from Google. The deal is expected to close in the third quarter of 2023.

Squarespace promises to keep the same pricing for existing customers for at least a year after the acquisition. It also says it will use Google’s technology to ensure the domains are transferred smoothly.

After everything is set, Squarespace will become the only option for people who want to buy a domain and use Google Workspace. Squarespace will also handle billing and support for Google Workspace customers who have domains from Google Domains. However, these customers may have to switch to Squarespace’s payment system when their subscriptions renew.

The acquisition will undoubtedly strengthen Squarespace’s position in the websites and domain market. Google’s decision to sell is surprising but not unheard of. The company has a history of discontinuing popular products without warning.
