Meta is currently testing a new feature on Threads designed to keep users informed about trending conversations on the platform. CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the app has initiated trials for "today's top topics" within the United States. According to Meta, these topics will be visible in search results and interspersed throughout the For You feed within the app.
Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, clarified that specific trends will be identified by AI algorithms based on current user engagement. Notably, Threads will include trending topics related to politics and elections, despite Meta's recent decision to limit the recommendation of political content unless users opt in. However, Meta has confirmed that this restriction will not apply to the trending feature, stating that political topics are permissible unless they violate Community Guidelines or other integrity policies.
The introduction of trending topics addresses a long-standing request from Threads users seeking real-time information and updates. While AI will play a significant role in determining the surfaced content, Meta also plans to curate the "top topics" with the help of a team of "content specialists." Their responsibility will be to ensure that the topics align with Community Guidelines, avoid duplication, and prevent the spread of misleading information.
The "today's top topics" feature is undergoing a limited trial phase. However, Zuckerberg has indicated that the feature will expand to more countries and languages as it undergoes refinement.
