Several Vision Pro owners are reporting identical, unexplained cracks appearing on the front glass of their headsets. The issue, first noticed by MacRumors, has been reported by five users on the r/VisionPro subreddit, with Engadget's review unit also experiencing the same problem.
Intriguingly, all reported cracks appear as vertical hairline fractures in the same location above the nose bridge. Affected users claim they took no actions that could explain the damage, such as dropping the device or storing it improperly. One user, @dornbirn, describes polishing the glass, attaching the soft cover, and storing it in the case before discovering the crack the next morning. Other users also report storing their headsets in cases or with the soft cover on.
Possible explanations for the cracks include heat buildup or a manufacturing defect. Some speculate that charging the Vision Pro in the case or with the cover on might cause overheating, leading to cracks. Others believe the issue could stem from a weakness in the glass itself or a design flaw causing stress in that specific area.
While the crack appears over a sensor, it doesn't seem to impact camera functionality. However, repairs are costly: even with AppleCare (US$500 or roughly CA$675), the deductible for cover glass damage is US$299 (~CA$404), and US$799 (~CA$1,079) without. One user reported being told they'd need to pay the deductible for repair.
The extent of the problem remains unclear. Reports are currently limited to Reddit, and The Verge's inquiry to Apple hasn't received a response.
