Samsung’s 5G phone will reportedly be called Galaxy S10 X

And it’ll be one more device Samsung is set to launch in San Francisco on February 20. According to Korean publication ETNews, this first 5G-enabled phone will be called the Galaxy S10 X to mark the 10th anniversary of the line as well as it standing for the words “experience” and “expand.” It’s going to be a sizable phone with some mean specs, at least according to rumours. It’ll reportedly have a 6.7-inch display with an in-display fingerprint reader, four cameras at the back, two in the front, and a big 5,000mAh battery. Memory configuration is supposed to be “more than” 10GB of RAM and 1TB storage (but as GSMArena points out, the latter could mean a 512GB internal + 512GB microSD configuration). If this report is to be believed, we’ll find out more when the phone launches next month.

Apple rumoured to be releasing first 5G phone in 2020

A new report from Fast Company suggests Apple is working on launching its first 5G-enabled phone in 2020. This next-generation cellular networking technology promises to bring faster download speeds for consumers and hardware makers have been working hard to get products ready for its arrival. Apple already has FCC approval to experiment with 5G last year, giving them room to work on a 5G phone. According to “a source with knowledge of Apple’s plans,” the said phone will be out in 2020.

While Apple has had its fair share of issues with Intel, the report claims Apple will be using Intel’s 8161 5G modem chip. However, said chip still has some issues to sort out, particularly when it comes to heat dissipation and its effect on battery life. Apple is rumoured to also be talking to MediaTek as a “Plan B.” Apple hasn’t commented on the report.

HTC said to be working on smartphone with Snapdragon 855 processor, 5G support

While HTC has been struggling in the mobile space, it seems the company isn’t ready to throw in the towel just yet. An update from the LinkedIn profile of HTC’s senior RF designer Kevin Kuo states the company is hoping to turn its fortunes with a new device running on Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 855 chip, which will bring performance and efficiency enhancements over the current Snapdragon 845 processor. It’s also being suggested on Kuo’s profile that HTC plans to pair the Snapdragon 855 chip with the optional Snapdragon X50 5G modem. Qualcomm has said it is “on track to help launch the first 5G mobile hotspots by the end of 2018.”

Snapdragon 855 phones aren’t expected to land until the middle of next year. There is no specified timeline for this HTC device but if HTC manages to beat its competition, then this might help them along.
