Google Chrome in beta can now mute videos that autoplay

The upcoming Google Chrome 64 promises to address a number of user issues, one of these is content that autoplays when you launch a site. Google plans to automatically mute videos that autoplay. You can start testing out this feature if you’re using Chrome 64 beta. Its full version will be available when the consumer version of the browser launches next month. You can access this feature in the permissions bar of the browser. But you’ll need to do this on a site-per-site basis. It is unfortunately not a one-time thing. It’ll work though for any content that is navigated under the parent domain.

One of the other new features coming to Chrome 64 include a better pop-up blocker. It’ll feature more security measures that’ll prevent any malicious auto-redirects from happening. The browser will also get HDR video playback when Windows 10 is in HDR mode. Meanwhile, on Chrome OS, there is a new “split view” feature for easier multitasking with multiple windows.

Google Chrome gets rid of annoying page jumps in new update

If you’ve found yourself scrolling through a website and have it jump right back to the top once a slow loading element loads, then we have to say you’re not alone. Google is fixing an annoying effect that happens when you’re reading in Chrome.  Called scroll anchoring, this new feature helps avoid those incidents from happening, especially when browsing on a phone. The update will lock the content you’re currently looking at on screen and will no longer jump when elements on the page load. This means it’ll keep you in the same spot so you can continue reading. One other issue this addresses is you won’t suddenly be clicking on links you haven’t intended to when the page jumped. You can see how it works in the clip above.

Shout is like Pocket with a few extra perks

A new Chrome and iOS app ups the ante on what read-it-later app Pocket can do. Called Shout, the app lets you gather online content—and it isn’t limited to news articles either. You can include everything from lectures, videos, to PDFs. The stuff you gather will be arranged into coherent lists and can be kept private or be shared publicly on Shout. The app even has its own discovery feature if you want to look for new content. Shout even allows for collaboration so others can include items into your lists and help you create email digests. While not customizable, these can then be forwarded to anyone following the newsletter.

Off The Record History extension gives you temporary access to Chrome Incognito browsing history

It’s generally great that Incognito mode on Google Chrome doesn’t keep any records of your browser history. But sometimes when you need access to a certain URL and accidentally close the window, you have no way of accessing it. That is until this this new extension. Off The Record History will keep your Incognito mode browsing history, your regular history, and recently closed tabs in a short-term history file while you have the browser open. Once you close it though, those links will be gone. You can check out the extension yourself but you’ll need to follow the instructions to make it work in Incognito mode.
