Google starts pre-orders for Daydream VR in some countries

It’s not yet Canada’s turn but Google’s affordable virtual reality headset is coming to the US, UK, and Germany soon. The Daydream View VR headset is now available for pre-order in those aforementioned countries and is set to ship next month. It’s made with a breathable fabric surrounding the viewer and is recommended to run with Daydream-ready phones, like the Google Pixel XL. The Daydream VR retails for $79 USD (around $100 CAD). We’ll let you know once we get word about local availability.

Your current phone might not be certified for Daydream VR

If you thought your current flagship device will prepare you for using Google’s Daydream VR (even the Nexus 6P developers are using to work with this VR platform), then you thought wrong. Google’s VR head Clay Bavor confirmed that there most likely won’t be “‘retroactively’ Daydream-ready phones” as the company wants to make sure that the components needed for a Daydream-ready device meets all their standards.

Engadget’s Daniel Cooper theorizes that the reason why existing smartphones won’t qualify is because of processing power. The new Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 is set to launch soon and that chipset places a big emphasis on better mobile VR and augmented reality experience. The Nexus 6P is also said to be getting a refreshed version this year with 4GB of RAM and said Qualcomm processor. So if VR is something you’re interested in getting on your Android phone, you might want to hold out just a bit. These Daydream-ready phones should be heading our way near the end of the year.
