Microsoft HoloLens to work for up to 5.5 hours on a single charge

Filling in the blanks for the things we don’t know about Microsoft’s virtual reality headset, HoloLens, we now get information on battery life, connectivity options, and app compatibility.  Microsoft Technical Evangelist Bruce Harris said at an event in Tel Aviv that the battery life of the VR headset runs between 2.5 and 5.5 hours per charge and depending on the task at hand. It’ll also be able to connect to almost all Wi-Fi or Bluetooth-enabled device. And it can also run any universal Windows 10 app. Its viewable area will be similar in size to what you can expect if you held a 15-inch screen two feet from your face. And while you might want to test these out for yourself, there might still be a while until you can get your hands on it. Developer kits are expected to arrive sometime during the first quarter of this year.

Microsoft wants to build your dream HoloLens app

If you have the perfect HoloLens app idea but don’t know how to create it, Microsoft wants to help you out. The company’s Share Your Idea challenge wants developers to submit holographic app concepts on or before January 11^th. The three most “viable” options will be posted on Twitter for voting. The idea that wins will be built by Microsoft. If you win, you’ll sit in for code reviews and Q&A sessions.

You might use Microsoft HoloLens in the future to buy Volvo cars

In the future you might not need to walk into physical showrooms to see Volvo cars. The Swedish car maker has partnered with Microsoft to use the tech giants HoloLens augmented reality headset to give you virtual showroom experience. It’ll give users the chance to examine the interior of a car or look at the drivetrain and transmission in action.

But this isn’t the only thing the two companies are working on. According to a report on GeekWire, the two companies are supposedly working on building autonomous vehicles as well to rival the likes of Google, Tesla, and even Apple. Microsoft is also working with other commercial partners, such as NASA JPL to make further use of HoloLens. If you’re company is interested in trying out HoloLens Development Edition, they are inviting applications for it. The US$3,000 kit will start shipping in the first quarter of next year.

Microsoft sees a future in Holograms with HoloLens

Microsoft's big next-gen technology play will be holograms, or at least the company's 'version' of this immersive virtual reality experience.

Just as rival Google has placed its Google Glass project in the hands of a new team, Microsoft revealed it has been working on its own augmented reality headset and glasses called HoloLens.
