Nest lets you Sightline video history scrub in landscape

Nest is improving how easy it is to scrub through your home security camera’s video timeline with its latest update. The app now supports timeline video scrubbing in landscape. Previously you can go through Sightline (the app’s name for your video history) in portrait mode with the video at the top of the screen and the timeline below it. It will let you swipe up and down through your saved footage. Now, this feature also works in landscape. The video will take up the entire screen and you can access the timeline off to the right edge of the screen. This will only appear if you swipe up or down.

Nest Cam IQ gives owners official wall mount for free

If you’ve bought the indoor version of the Nest Cam IQ recently, you might have noticed that the high-end security camera comes with its own wall mount included in the box. The company recently confirmed via an update in its support pages that the camera gets the wall mount and for those who missed out can get one for free. You just need to get in touch with Nest via its website. Those who request one will get it shipped free of charge overnight but limited to one mount per Nest Cam IQ.

The mount is pretty straightforward with two holes on the left and right for screws to help you attach it to the wall. Four screws are included in the package. Its bottom has rubber padding to prevent it from scratching the wall. To attach to the camera itself, you get the standard 1/4"-20 tripod screw. It also comes with four cable clips to help with cable management.

Indoor Nest Cam IQ gets support for Google Assistant

Nest just updated its indoor Cam IQ security camera to add support for Google Assistant. The move seems in line with Nest being merged into Google’s hardware division fairly recently. However, Nest made the announcement about this feature back in September but thankfully it’s finally here. When you use the usual “OK Google” commands, the Cam IQ’s blue light will shine to let you know it’s listening. It’ll let you do basic web searches, create shopping lists, set reminders, dim the lights, and change the temperature. But you can’t use it to control the Cam IQ itself. You can’t use your voice to turn it on and off just yet. But who knows if Google plans to add this in the future. It must also be noted that this update won’t be coming to the outdoor version of the Cam IQ.

Nest will now be part of Google

With companies fighting to bring its artificial intelligence technology into its products, the latest move from Google’s parent company Alphabet makes sense. Nest will be merged into Google’s hardware team with its current CEO Marwan Fawaz reporting directly to Google Hardware SVP Rick Osterloh. This merger, according to Google, will allow them to “combine hardware, software, and services” between the two companies with “Google’s artificial intelligence and the Assistant at the core.” But this doesn’t mean the Nest brand is going away, at least according to CNET. The merger was also supposedly years in the making with the two teams reportedly combining its supply chain teams back in 2016. Also, it must be noted that during the “Made By Google” Pixel 2 launch, the Nest got a spot in there, where the integration of Google Assistant into Nest products were discussed.
