Screens for some Galaxy Note8, S8 users reportedly wake up on their own

There seems to be more battery-related issues for Samsung’s current flagships. This time though it seems to be related more to the display that could lead to some battery drain. Reports on Samsung’s forums and Reddit detail how some Galaxy S8 and S8+ units as well as Note8 phones continue to wake up even without user interaction or even when the flip cover case is in use for some. Restoring the phone to factory settings doesn’t seem to fix the issue. One user was able to fix the problem temporarily by wiping the cache but the problem started up again when the phone is used.

While OLED displays are much more efficient at saving power than LCDs, if the screen keeps turning on, that’ll still cause battery drain. It must be noted though that this bug isn’t related to the battery issue other users are experiencing. But here’s to hoping Samsung resolves both problems soon.

Samsung acknowledges there are charging issues for some Note8 and S8 devices

Review: Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+

While we don’t know how many devices are affected by this new battery issue Samsung is facing, the South Korean company is at least acknowledging it’s happening. The issue this time is that some Galaxy Note8 and S8 units won’t charge after fully draining the battery. The company is replacing units on a case-by-case basis and is encouraging customers affected by the issue to contact their carriers they got the unit from or head to Samsung directly if you got an unlocked unit.

In a statement released to PCWelt.de, Samsung says, “Samsung takes all reports of this kind, of course, seriously. We have received only a very small number of customer inquiries that can be linked to charge management. Unfortunately, we can only comment on the matter further, if we have more detailed information about the affected devices.”

Android Oreo update for Samsung Galaxy Note8 Verizon version leaks online

For Galaxy Note8 users, the wait for the Android Oreo might not be that long. A leaked version of the Android Oreo over-the-air update for the Samsung flagship phablet shows up online, but it’s specifically for the Verizon version in the US (SM-M950U). It does suggest, though, that we might expect the official update to come out soon. It can’t be said what version of the update this is but according to GSMArena it doesn’t seem like the final build. It does run on Android 8.0.0 along with Samsung Experience 9.0. It’s supposedly working fine for some Reddit users but it, of course, comes with the usual word of caution when it comes to flashing a build found online and installed on your phone.

You can now fully disable Bixby on Galaxy S8 devices and Note8

It seems like a hard-fought battle but finally Samsung has acquiesced to the demands of the users of being able to disable the Bixby button. It can now be physically disabled so it would no longer summon up the Bixby Home screen. At first, they disabled it but it could still wake up the phone’s display like the power key would. The latest update though completely disables the button. The caveat, though, is you need to update all Bixby-related apps (Bixby, Bixby Home, and Bixby Service) on your Samsung Galaxy S8, S8 Plus, and Note 8 to the latest version to disable the feature.
