Samsung builds on camera module work with ISOCELL brand

Samsung looks like they’re getting serious about developing camera modules for smartphones. The South Korean company is naming this image sensor brand as ISOCELL. This new division will be developing four types of cameras that bear descriptive names: Bright, Fast, Slim, and Dual. The last seems like a nod to the possible inclusion of a dual camera setup in the upcoming Galaxy Note8.

Bright refers to sensors aimed at low-light shooting. It’ll offer high color fidelity and low noise. Fast alludes to instant autofocus and the ability to track fast-moving objects even in the dark. Slim type will feature smallest pixels available so they can create modules that will fit into phones where space is limited. And dual provides several sensors that can be paired in different configurations to get that dual-camera setup.

LG Innotek is reportedly exclusive dual-lens camera module supplier for ‘iPhone 7 Plus’

"iPhone 7 Plus" dual camera design mockup by Feld & Volk

If a recent Korean report is to be believed, LG Innotek instead of Sony will be supplying the rumoured dual-lens camera modules for the upcoming Apple “iPhone 7 Plus.” The shipping of the modules, according to Business Korea, should start this month and will see LG monopolizing the supply of that part for the rest of the year. But that could change by 2017 if other partners enter the picture. Sony was expected to be fulfilling this order or at least take majority of it since the company has been a regular image sensor supplier for Apple. But low production yields and earthquake damage at its Kumamoto facilities have caused manufacturing issues for Sony. Sony denied any disruption in production but reports like these say otherwise. Previous rumours claim that LG was supposed to take the first wave of orders but it seems they’ll be taking on all orders.

Your future flagship smartphone might have Sony’s dual-camera system

Dual-camera setups for smartphones aren’t exactly that new. But there are rumours of the likes of the iPhone 7 and LG G5 that would be sporting this type of camera system. Adding more credence to the rumours is the recent announcement by Sony’s Chief Financial Officer Kenichiro Yoshida that “major smartphone players” will be using Sony’s own dual-camera system.

He was asked by an analyst what his thoughts were on dual-camera adoption in the next one to two years and what these could me for operations. “Well, for next year, our so-called dual lens – dual camera platform will be launched by, we believe, from major smartphone players. However, as I said previously, recently, our smartphone market is growing and particularly, our high-end smartphone market is now slowing down. So, that may impact the demand or production schedule of dual camera smartphones by the major smartphone manufacturers. So, we believe the real start, the takeoff of smartphone with dual lens camera will be in the year of 2017.”
