Patrick Stewart to reprise Capt. Picard role for new CBS All Access ‘Star Trek’ series

CBS

Looks like we’re going to see more of Sir Patrick Stewart play the iconic Capt. Jean-Luc Picard as he will begin work on a new Star Trek series for CBS All Access. The plot details haven’t been revealed just yet but it focuses on the next chapter in Picard’s life, which means it takes place after the events of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The series comes from Alex Kurtzman, James Duff, Akiva Goldsman, Michael Chabon, and Kirsten Beyer. Kurtzman, Duff, Goldsman, and Chabon will also serve as executive producers for the show alongside Stewart, Trevor Roth, Heather Kadin, and Rod Roddenberry. CBS Television Studios will produce the series, which doesn’t have a premiere date just yet.

Is there a Quentin Tarantino ‘Star Trek’ movie in our future?

Quentin Tarantino is known for his love of genre films but the director has steered clear of gigantic film franchises. However, that might change soon. Deadline reports that Tarantino pitched to producer J.J. Abrams his original idea for a Star Trek movie, which he could possibly direct. The report says the pair plan to assemble screenwriters to develop the concept into a screenplay.

The move makes sense as both filmmakers have big projects they’re working on: Tarantino is set to start shooting his next film, which is a drama set in Los Angeles around the time of the Charles Manson murders, while Abrams is working on Star Wars: Episode IX. With the idea basically a concept at this point, we can’t even say what it’ll be about. But we’re wondering if a Tarantino-led Trek film would be something yoou’d like to see?

‘Star Trek: Discovery’ to get a female lead

The upcoming new Star Trek: Discovery will be continuing on the tradition of Star Trek’s diverse casting choices. The new show, which will be set a decade before the original TV series, will have a woman as its lead actor. They won’t name yet who will be leading the show but we should hear news soon enough. The lead though won’t be like Captain Kirk, instead she’ll be a lieutenant commander. The series will debut in the US on CBS in January 2017 and then the rest of the season will be on CBC All Access there and will stream on Netflix internationally.

"We're going deep into something that was for me always very tantalizing, and [we're telling] that story through a character who is on a journey that is going to teach her how to get along with others in the galaxy," series creator Bryan Fuller told reporters Wednesday during the Television Critics Association summer press tour. "For her to truly understand something that is alien, she has to first understand herself."

Zachary Quinto pays tribute to ‘Star Trek’ co-star Anton Yelchin

You’ve probably recently heard of the passing of Star Trek star Anton Yelchin in an automobile accident. While we don’t know how his death will affect his role as Pavel Chekov in the upcoming Star Trek Beyond, we’re hearing from one of his co-stars pay tribute to the actor. Zachary Quinto, who plays Spock in the new Star Trek movies, honors his friend Yelchin during a recent guesting on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Quinto and Yelchin started working on the Star Trek movies in 2007 and he has nothing but good words to say about the actor.

“We already know this’ll be a bittersweet experience with the loss of Leonard [Nimoy] but this has been absolutely devastating for all of us…,” Quinto says. “I think our goal has to be to just celebrate his incredible life and honor him as much as we can. It’s terrible loss not only to us personally but to the industry, audiences, he was such a talent.” You can watch the rest of the interview above.
