Review: iSkin Solo ultra-slim case for iPhone 4

By Gadjo Cardenas Sevilla

iSkin has been making ultra-slim cases for the iPhone since the 2G came out in 2007 (has it been that long?). For the iPhone 4, they’ve redesigned the iSkin Solo to match the new phone’s squarish design. Let's see how this rubber case stacks up.

For everyday protection against small impacts and scratches plus an added grip, this is the sort of case that works really well. You slip it on and pretty much forget about it. iSkin has done a nice job of using varied textures for the interior of the case, the sides where you are most likely to grip it and also the back. The fit is snug although not completely precise and one problem that arose was that the power button was constantly being pressed so the iPhone kept putting up the swipe-to-close screen. You can adjust this quite easily but it is unnerving to think what could happen once this is out of sight in your pocket.

Still, the iSkin Solo for the iPhone 4 (US $30.00) is one of the nicer and more expensive looking rubber cases for the iPhone 4 and iSkin makes them available in a plethora of colours to suit all tastes. The iSkin Solo is also antimicrobial, has the lifetime guarantee and would be an ideal solution when matched with a screen protector.

We have to note the problems we’ve found with most rubber iPhone cases. They tend to attract lint and dust and sometimes this grit gets caught between the case and the body of the iPhone and could actually lead to scratches. Rubber cases are also prone to warping and deforming as well as sealing in moisture, that’s just the nature of the beast.

Still, they do offer all-around protection and with this glass iPhone 4 are probably the best bet for preserving the device during clumsy drops and unexpected accidents. If you can get over the dust and warping and are comfortable with the rubbery aspect, then the iSkin Solo could be a functional and ideal iPhone 4 case.
