Norton Study: 68 per cent of Canadian children report an increase in negative online experiences
Norton by Symantec released the findings of its 2011 Norton Online Family Report. The report surveyed 19,636 adults, parents, children and teachers globally, including more than 800 Canadians, and revealed some surprising figures:
· 68 per cent of Canadian children report an increase in negative online experiences, up seven percent from last year
· Only five per cent of parents in Canada say they have no idea what their children do online, but 17 per cent of children in Canada think their parents are clueless and have no idea about their online activities
· Of the Canadian teachers surveyed, eight per cent have personally experienced or know another teacher who has experienced “cyberbaiting” – a growing phenomenon where kids taunt their teachers, then capture the distressed reactions via cell phone videos and post them online
· Only six per cent of Canadian teachers are friends with students on social networks, compared to 34 per cent globally
