Review: iFrogz iLuxe Original and OtterBox Commuter Series iPad hardcases
By Gadjo Cardenas Sevilla
Hardcases offer the ultimate protection for the iPad and cover the entire back as well as the borders surrounding the device while leaving the screen and the important ports open to access. The problem with most hardcase solutions is that they add considerable bulk. The iFrogz iLuxe Original and OtterBox Commuter Series are low-profile solutions that protect the iPad but add relatively less weight and bulk for better handling.
iFrogz iLuxe Original
Sporting the trademark iFrogz satin rubber finish, the iFrogz iLuxe Original iPad ($49.95) case is a two-piece case that covers and protects the rear and the sides of the iPad while limiting the bulk.
Installing the case requires fitting the iPad into the larger top case while taking care to get the volume buttons into the proper slot. Once the top is secured, you simply slide in the bottom case and everything snaps shut.
We like how iFrogz has placed a layer of felt in the areas that make the most contact with the iPad. This ensures that the chance of scratching that gorgeous aluminum is minimized (but you should still wipe down both case and iPad before installing anything).
The iFrogz iLuxe is the lightest hardcase solution we've tested and we felt that it offered above average all around support while maintaining good access to all the necessary buttons and ports. We wouldn't think twice about placing the iPad and the iFrogz luxe in a bag provided the screen is well cushioned.

OtterBox Commuter Series iPad Case
OtterBox is famous for making uncompromising complete-protection solutions for personal electronic devices. Their Commuter Series iPad Hardcase offers the best rugged yet lightweight protection. It incorporates a soft and pliable rubber membrane that surrounds most of the iPad (leaving a hole for the Apple logo in the back).
OtterBox also includes one of the best microfiber cloths we've ever used and it is ideal for wiping off smudges, dust and dirt. You also get a matte screen protector which ensures that the iPad's screen has an additional layer of scratch protection.
Once inserted in the rubber layer, you need to squeeze everything in to the hard plastic exterior cover. The exterior cover is like an exoskeleton and is really resilient and strong. As a result, it is a bit of a challenge to get everything aligned but once it is the overall feeling is a solid, impact and moisture resistant case.
The OtterBox Commuter Series case is ideal for iPads that are used on the field or for parents who have small children who are likely to manhandle the iPad while playing with it. Most of the buttons and ports are completely protected and even the dock connector is completely hidden by a removable plastic cover. In terms of build quality and rigidity, nothing comes close to OtterBox Commuter Series and we see this as a popular choice for iPad's on field or even in educational settings.
This is really the most complete protection that's still reasonably light and somewhat thin.
