Motoring: Mazda to debut SKYACTIV fuel-saving technology

Mazda's Minagi ConceptMazda will debut new fuel-saving  suite of technologies collectively named SKYACTIV at the New York Auto Show later this month, along with its Minagi concept show vehicle (above) and refreshed 2012 Mazda3.

SKYACTIV is a suite of technologies, including completely redesigned and highly efficient gasoline and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, and advanced body and chassis. The combined components will improve every aspect of the driving experience, including performance, handling, fuel economy and safety.

The first application of Mazda’s new SKYACTIV-G gasoline engine and SKYACTIV transmissions will debut in the 2012 Mazda3 later this fall.

The Minagi compact SUV is the first Mazda concept vehicle to fully adopt the SKYACTIV suite of technologies, along with its new Kodo or “soul of motion” design theme, initially seen in the Shinari concept that debuted last year. The Minagi provides direction for the brand’s next generation of vehicles and is the inspiration for an upcoming production model, the company said.
