LG Optimus 2X, Optimus Black and Sony Xperia Arc S and Mini Pro denied Android upgrades
Proving once again that there are no guaranteed OS upgrades with certain Android smartphone manufacturers. LG and Sony have both recently indicated that certain recent models will not be receiving Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean updates.
In LG's case, it is the Optimus Black and Optimus 2X which are stuck in Gingerbread-land. LG Canada broke the sad news on Twitter recently stating, “The Optimus Black will not be receiving the ICS upgrade” LG Canada said through the popular social network. LG sent a similar message regarding the Optimus 2X which was expected to get the software updates.
For many users, not having the latest version of the smartphone OS isn't a big deal as long as the phone works well. Newer versions of Google's Android tend to bring a number of stability improvements, cool features plus access to the newer versions of apps that developers are working on.
LG has failed to offer OS upgrades for other Android devices. Their Optimus Pad 3G 8.9-inch tablet has never received a software update in Canada despite repeated requests from users who purchased the device.
John Cooper, the UK Product Manager for Sony Mobile used Facebook to drop the bombshell that both the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc S and Xperia mini pro will not receive the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update.
This is unfortunate for users of these devices who bought the smartphones thinking they would get updates and extend the life of their devices. It also serves as an eye opener for future buyers that there are no guarantees with Android devices getting upgrades and which companies have failed to give their customers the software updates.
