Sony reportedly behind e-paper wearable FES Watch

Sony has been recently rumoured to be developing a smartwatch made entirely out of electronic paper. The idea doesn’t seem so far off with recent reports that surfaced. According to the Wall Street Journal, Sony is behind the e-paper-toting watch called FES Watch. The device made a comeback on Japanese crowdfunding site Makuake for those who want to get their hands on the product. The FES Watch reached its target funding back in September.

It isn’t a smartwatch per se (no push notifications and voice search just yet) but what makes it unique is it uses e-paper on the dial and strap. There are 24 designs to choose from so you can switch between them with a physical button on the side of the device to change its look.

One big advantage of it is long running times, this watch will reportedly have a 60-day battery life. But it doesn’t offer much outside of being a unique analog watch. Instead, it shows us how future smartwatches could be. For example, notifications can be displayed on the band instead of the dial.

Sony hasn’t released an official statement saying they’re behind the device though. But someone involved with the project said they hid the brand’s name to test the value of the product. Initial units are expected to be shipped after May 2015.
