Review: Kurio Extreme Tablet for Kids
By Sonya Davidson
As parents, how often do we hear our kids asking for our devices? My husband cringes at the thought of our younger one getting his sticky little hands on any of our devices for fear of dropping them or accidentally deleting apps and what not. I'm sure you've been there.
Recently we had a chance to test out the KURIO EXTREME Tablet designed for kids and it completely won us over as one of our top gaming devices of the holiday season. Our little testers included my 4 year nephew (aka extreme little monkey), 8 year old niece, and my 10 year old son.
Each of them could set up their own profiles on the one device and we were able to customize appropriate apps for each age. By the way, you can set up 8 profiles on this one device.
The andriod device comes already with 90 of the most popular apps out there including Cut The Rope 2 and Fruit Ninja. The kids loved the vast selection that can we've had previously loaded on our "adult devices" but now they can have their own. Updates on new apps are available as well but parents get to approve or block as desired.
That's the beauty of this particular device -- the extensive parental controls make it a very appealing for families with younger kids. Apps are selected via the Kurio app store only inappropriate apps have been filtered out. Access to the internet exists but parents an configure each profile separately to control and filter based on age and categories.
Having too much fun? Or it's time for dinner or homework? Parents can set up "time management" controls for each profile to restrict how much time you want to allow your child to play on a daily basis. Define the time of day and even the maximum amount of play time.
A fun and unique feature of the KURIO EXTREME is the fun motion games. Prop the device on the stand (included) and kids will want to get up and move.
The 4 year old in particular loved this as he is a mover and shaker.
The android device also has access to over 150 eBooks so it's very much a tablet and not so much a "toy" which gives little kids that "I'm a big kid" sense of pride and do things they see mom and dad do on their tablets.
Of course, as mentioned, how many times does our devices get dropped accidentally? The KURIO EXTREME includes an optional rubber case (pink or blue) to protect it.
The KURIO EXTREME 7" android tablet runs on Intel so of course it's fast. For more information visit KurioWorld.com.
By the way, I'm completely shocked at the current retail price of $159.99 (December 6, 2014. Toys R Us Canada) for this tablet. It definitely is worth checking out for your little ones!
Our little testers have been loving this device and making it their own. I don't have to worry about them dropping ours anymore!
