Second ever Canadian Google Glass Hackathon celebrates Toronto
Between Friday, April 25, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 27, at 9 p.m., a group of lucky Canadians who were able to get their hands on Google Glass will get together to come up with apps that will benefit the city of Toronto and those who live in it. Led by Glass Explorer, Macy Kuang, the Hackathon already has 15 participants signed up for the 2014 event with one common goal in mind: to make their app ideas come to life in one weekend.
This year, the Google Glass Hackathon is being sponsored by BNOTIONS – a Mobile Strategy, Data and Analytics Innovation Firm in Toronto – and MaRS Discovery District. The initiative is also being supported by the City of Toronto, who will show participants all the city’s Open Data during the event. Also, any of the teams creating apps using Toronto’s Open Data will be eligible to present their apps at City Hall and apps will also be posted on Toronto.ca.
Canada’s first-ever Google Glass Hackathon, which happened in July of 2013, resulted in four new apps to add to the growing directory of Glassware for Google’s wearable tech. The apps created last year included Stereo, a music streaming app that plays music from SoundCloud and Words With Glass, an app that allows users to say a word in their native tongue and than have Glass say the word back in the language they’re learning. The Hackathon also generated two apps with food themes: Happy Belly – a nutritional information app which provides users the ability to figure out the calorie count in food or menu items on the go and Glass Eats, a restaurant finder for Google Glass that provides users with restaurant choices nearby or search by restaurant category. You can find more information on the 2013 apps here.
