Samsung launches Galaxy Tab S tablets with Super AMOLED screen technology

By Gadjo Cardenas Sevilla

Samsung Canada's officially launched the new series of Samsung Galaxy Tab S tablets which are available for preorder today and which will be in stores on June 27. The Wi-Fi version of the Samsung GALAXY Tab S will come in 10.5-inch and 8.4-inch versions in Titanium Bronze and Dazzling White. The Wi-Fi version of the GALAXY Tab S will be available at select retailers in Canada starting June 27th for $519.99 (10.5-inch) and $419.99 (8.4-inch).

Aside from being super thin at 6.6 mm, the new Tab S tablets boast identical Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processors running at 2.3 GHz, 3GB of RAM and capacities starting at 16GB which are expandable to 128GB with an optional microSD card.

The Super AMOLED screen is the big feature this year with the 10.5-inch version sporting a dazzling 2560x1600, 16:10 resolution. Aside from screen size and resolution, the Tab S 10.5 and 8.4 version are identical in terms of features.

At the demo earlier today, I noticed the look and feel of the new Tab S line is more premium and upscale than what we saw last year. While these are consumer-focused tablets, Samsung has made a clear effort to make them attractive to enterprise users and yes all the requisite Samsung security features are also available. This premium approach extends to the cases and accessories that will be available for the tablets. Samsung has gotten rid of the faux leather look and is now sporting a more sensible dimpled design similar to the Galaxy S 5.

It must be noted that aside from upping specs and the display, battery life is rated at 11-hours when watching movies in full-HD resolution. Samsung has also gone for a more wholistic approach by partnering with various content providers like Netflix (guaranteeing the Tab S devices will show videos in full HD resolution) and NextIssue among others whose apps now take full advantage of the display.

No review units were provided at the demo so we'll reserve our insights until we've had ample time to really put these devices throught their paces.
