Volvo renews commitment to hybrid and EV options
Known for safety, comfort and performance, Volvo is going to be synonymous with electric hybrid vehicles. The company is committed to hybrids and will include a plug-in option for each of its models going forward. The end game is a fully-electric car by 2019.
The motoring industry is in a tailspin right now, right after the shocking revelations that VW used software to cheat at emissions tests in the US and in Europe, it has become imperative to question the long-term viability of a purely gas automotive future. Hybrid vehicles, which use gas engines to charge electric motors, seem to be the best interim solutions (in terms of cost and fuel consumption).
Volvo is betting on the future. The company believes that 2020 to 2025 will be a tipping point for electric vehicles and it hopes to be in place with an all-electric SUV. The S90 saloon as well as various compact Volvo models will have plug-in hybrid options but at the cost of AWD (all-wheel drive) to enhance the efficiency of the electric component.
