'Project Phire' is Corning's answer to sapphire crystal for smartphones and tablets

Corning has made four generations of Gorilla Glass which serve to protect multi-touch displays on smartphones and tablets. Since these devices are mostly glass, they need to have some durability and drop resistance and Gorilla Glass has succeeded in making this possible while continously making glass thinner and even more curved.

Scratch resistance is a property that sapphire crystals are known for, that's why it is the choice for premium watches but is still too expensive to mass produce for smartphones, tablets and smart watches. Corning created glaas that, "offers the same superior damage resistance and drop performance of Gorilla Glass 4 with scratch resistance that approaches sapphire." Corning's innovation will definitely serve the whole industry.
