OnePlus 2 brings dual-SIM capabilities to the flagship Android segment

The OnePlus 2 was revealed earlier today and while still being made available on an invitation basis, the replacement for the OnePlus One does bring a lot of desirable innovations. Top of the list are a 64-bit Snapdragon 810 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of onboard storage and a secure fingerprint scanner.

A surprising and welcome feature addition is dual-SIM capability, which is ideal for world travelers needing the convenience of keeping their home SIM and phone number but who want the option of using a prepaid SIM for local calls. Also on tap is the new USB Type-C connector which features the ability for power as well as ease of connectivity. Also new is the OxygenOS, which replaces the Cyanogenmod variant of Android that was being pushed as a major feature for the OnePlus One.

The OnePlus 2 also features an all new metal and glass design, a departure from its predecessor's  polycarbonate case. The display is a 5.5” IPS LCD display, a 13-megapixel camera with an f /2.0 aperture and software tweaked for low-light photography and a laser-focus sensor.

Unfortunately, it seems the OnePlus 2 will again be in short supply just like its predecessor was. OnePlus says that to be able to get an invite to purchase the device, you must get an invitation from someone who has bought a OnePlus 2 or join in their contest or promotions. Last year, some of these contests involved destroying rival smartphones on video for the chance of purchasing the OnePlus One for a minimal fee. Pricing for the OnePlus 2 starts at US $320 for the 16GB version and $389 for the 64GB version, Canadians can expect to pay import taxes over the shipping costs.
