Lenovo Tech World promises innovation and emerging technologies

By Gadjo Cardenas Sevilla

We're two days away from what is expected to be a monumental Lenovo Tech World launch event in San Francisco. Not only are we expected to see the latest devices and technologies from Lenovo, we are also expecting to see a plethora of announcements around Moto, Project Tango as well as AI and VR technologies.

Lenovo Tech World 2016 is taking things to another level, this year's event is being held right in the Bay Area at the historic Masonic theatre in downtown San Francisco and it looks like Lenovo has decided to take its technology and innovation right to the backyard of its Silicon Valley competitors and partners.

What's been heavily teased is the release of the first Project Tango smartphones, which it is building in cooperation with Google. Project Tango  brings Motion Tracking, Depth Perception, and Area Learning to mobile devices. Lenovo has thousands of developers  building experiences that do things like finding your way around, measuring your world, and walking through stories. Many have been waiting to see this in a smartphone product.

Lenovo will also unveil the latest Moto family of flagship devices rumoured to go under the Moto Z name. The image on the left is presumably the ultra-thin Moto Z Style which is an unprecedented  5.2 mm in thinness and as such is reminiscent of the iconic Moto RAZR but in a smartphone candybar form factor.

It seems as if the innovative spirit of Motorola Mobility lives on under Lenovo, althout there are hints that the new Moto flagships will be able to take back covers to change their look and feel (leather, rubber, wood) as well as MotoMods, which are modular accessories to expand the smartphone's functionality. A camera module, pico projector, battery pack and other presumed accessories.

Then, there's also some VR and AI intrigue, specially now that Lenovo has thrown in with Movidus which makes VR visual processing units shows that the company is thinking about its own approach to VR and AI for its products.

Lenovo Tech World begins on Thursday June 9 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time. I am covering the event, announcements and product demos live here.
