Back-to-basics LG G6 flagship unveiled in Barcelona

By Gadjo Cardenas Sevilla

LG revealed a brand new flagship smartphone in Barcelona earlier today. The LG G6 is a back-to-basics device designed for reliability, performance, as well as water-resistance. Featuring a 5.7-inch display with thin bezels, this is a larger smartphone that's designed to fit better in user's hands.

The 5.70-inch QHD+ (2,880 x 1,440 resolution) FullVision display has a unique 18:9 screen aspect ratio. Compared to conventional 16:9 aspect ratio displays, the 18:9 format offers more viewing space and a more immersive experience as well as improved multi-screen experiences. The corners of the display are also rounded, something we haven't seen since the Palm Pre. Unlike the LG G5, which offered various accessories, the LG G6 is a solid, standalone device that brings the focus and feature-set back to the handset.

The LG G6 is made of a composite of Gorilla Glass 3 up front, Gorilla Glass 4 covering the dual 13-megapixel rear cameras and Gorilla Glass 5 for the rear, everything is held together by a sleek aluminium frame. The LG G6 has IP68 water and dust resistance that makes it safe to be immersed in up to 1.5 meters of water for as long as 30 minutes.

The LG G6 is an important flagship handset for 2017. Being one of the first to be released by a leading company, it sets the pace for what will become the standard this year. In terms of specs, the LG G6 does not disappoint. This is the latest LG phone with dual 13MP rear cameras, including a 125-degree lens that's designed for wide-angle shots and videos.

Powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 821 Processor, 4GB of RAM, 32GB or 64GB of storage, a 3,300mAh battery as well as the latest version of Android with improved Google Assistant.

“The LG G6 offers users new visual and manual experiences, as it marries an expanded screen with the convenience of one-handed use,” said Juno Cho, president of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “LG will continue to lead smartphone innovation with a focus on convenience and reliability in order to exceed consumer expectations.”

Regional Differences

It seems that North American models will not get the 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC which offers improved audio playback and high-resolution audio. Instead, they will get wireless charging functionality. Pricing and availability in Canada is still to be announced. Stay tuned for more information here in the next few days.
