Uber loses its president after 6 months on the job

Amidst all the controversies it finds itself in, its second in command has left the company. The news first broke on Recode and has now been confirmed by the ride-sharing company. Uber President Jeff Jones has left the company. According to a statement from Uber they “want to thank Jeff for his six months and the company and wish him all the best.” Prior to his job at Uber, he previously ran marketing for Target. Jones headed Uber’s operations, marketing, and customer support. But it seems the difficult past few months for the company proved to be too difficult for him.

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick sent a letter to employees on Sunday saying Jones made the decision to leave after the company said it would hire a chief operating officer. Kalanick wrote, “Jeff came to the tough decision that he doesn’t see his future at Uber.” Jones in a statement released to Recode has a different take on the matter, “I joined Uber because of its Mission, and the challenge to build global capabilities that would help the company mature and thrive long-term. It is now clear, however, that the beliefs and approach to leadership that have guided my career are inconsistent with what I saw and experienced at Uber, and I can no longer continue as president of the ride sharing business.”

Among the many issues Uber has been facing the past few months include the #DeleteUber campaign, which was a result of the company turning off surge pricing at New York airports while the taxi drivers protested US President Trump’s travel ban; a sexual harassment complaint from one of the company’s former engineers; and a report that the company has a tool that deliberately deceives authorities in cities where the app has been banned or had restricted access in.
