Apple discontinuing iPod shuffle and nano models

Apple has announced it is discontinuing its remaining non-internet capable iPod models after ceasing production of the iPod Classic some time ago. The iPod nano and iPod Shuffle models, which haven't been updated in a long time now, are officially being shelved for good.

"Today, we are simplifying our iPod lineup with two models of iPod touch now with double the capacity starting at just $199," Apple said in a statement. "And, we are discontinuing the iPod shuffle and iPod nano."

With the growth of streaming music services, including Apple's own Apple Music, fewer consumers are buying new music to carry on devices like the iPod shuffle and nano, which rely mostly on iTunes, Apple's long in the tooth music app that could use a huge revamp. The move signifies the near end of the iPod line of standalone music players leaving the iPod Touch, basically a budget iPhone without the phone, as the standalone music-focused device. The Apple Watch, which has 4GB of storage, is also capable of playing back stored music.
