Dyson is the company that's considered a serial innovator in a number of consumer electronic spaces. The company brings the brightest design and engineering talent to appliances and devices that have remained in the past. Dyson's home vacuum cleaners are now compact, hand held and wireless. Their fans are bladeless, yet powerful enough to cool and heat areas quickly as well as provide unparalleled air filtration.
Dyson has also innovated in the hair dryer space, coming out with ther Supersonic line of smart hair dryers that are preferred by professional hair cutters and stylists. Dyson held an event at the Glassbox Barbershop in Toronto to discuss the technology and innovation behind their Supersonic hair dryers as well as some of the trends in men's hair fashion.
The photo above shows a conventional hair dryer motor (left) virtually unchanged from the past 70 years. On the right is Dyson's Supersonic V9 motor which is placed on the handle of the hair dryer for better balance. With an integrated processor, this hair dryer has heat control to avoid harming hair or the scalp.
The Dyson motor can generate 110 RPM and blows air at 105 MPH. More than just incredible power in a small form factor, Dyson has enabled various magnetic tips and ends to properly sculpt hair without drying it out and creating frizz.
Dyson doesn't just sweat the details on the engineering and ergonomics of the product. The company also tries to understand its effect on hair. Dyson says they have two hair labs, one in the UK and the other in Singapore. The company has multiple studies on hair and the effects of dryers.
Dyson says it took 105 engineers and $50 million of investment to create and refine the Supersonic hair dryer. How does this benefit men's groomimg? According to stylists from Glassbox Barbershow, the new trends show men growing out their hair and going for a more natural layered look. This means less use of products like gel or mousse to style and greater emphasis in using a hair dryer to get hair to behave accordingly. Dyson' Supersonic is considered a precision instrument that is versatile and capable of handling all the styling needs.
