Spotify will let artists submit unreleased or new music to its playlist editors

A new feature Spotify is testing out in beta will allow artists to submit their unreleased or new music directly to playlist editors for curated playlist consideration. So, for any artist or manager who have a Spotify for Artists or labels using Spotify Analytics, they can submit their songs and these will be made available to over 100 editors Spotify employs around the world. What’s important for these songs to be considered is that they include as much information as possible, including genre, mood, the cultures the artist or song represents, if it’s a cover, and other data that can help the editors classify the song. And if these tracks are submitted seven days in advance, these can be automatically added to the artist’s followers’ Release Radar playlists.

Before this, artists and labels had to ask for intros to playlist editors in hopes of getting their tracks included in the playlists. This move can help emerging artists break by being featured in the bigger playlists or help the big acts promote their new music. According to Spotify, over 75,000 artists are featured in its editorial playlists every week, with another 150,000 appearing in its Discover Weekly playlist.

Spotify also took the time from this announcement to emphasize that it doesn’t accept payment to be included in playlists, which seems like a thing when it came to the over-the-top promotion of Drake’s newest album. The company said, “We want to make something crystal clear: no one can pay to be added to one of Spotify’s editorial playlists. Our editors pick tracks with listeners in mind. They make these decisions using data about what’s resonating most with their community of listeners.”
