Pixel Buds 2: Google's first truly wireless earbuds

One of the new products unveiled at Google's recent event is the second-generation Pixel Buds. This time, it can genuinely be called a wireless set that promises hands-free access to Google Assistant. It's set to land in the Spring of 2020 for US$179 (around CA$235). But we have no confirmation yet if these earbuds will make their way here. 

The Pixel Buds join a continually growing market with the likes of the Apple AirPods 2, Microsoft Surface Earbuds, and Amazon Echo Buds, to name a few. But what Google hopes to offer with the Pixel Buds 2 is better integration with Google Assistant. 

It promises easy access to the virtual assistant for devices running Android 6.0 or later, allowing you to ask it to send messages, ask for directions, and even get translation help when needed. A touch on the earbuds will let you play or pause what you're listening to. You can adjust the volume by swiping. And it can go the distance, too. Google says you will stay connected to your phone "three rooms away indoors or a football field-distance away outdoors."

Unfortunately for iOS users, the Pixel Buds will only act as regular Bluetooth earbuds. There will be no Google Assistant integration there, but that doesn't come as much as of surprise. 

Google built the Pixel Buds 2 with ear tips that can create a seal to block out background noise, but it'll also offer an adaptable sound that adjusts the volume dynamically while you move through different environments. The company promises that during calls, the two mics will focus on your voice and block out background noise and other environmental sounds.

The Pixel Buds are expected to have a five-hour battery life of continuous listening but can be topped up for another 24 hours with the wireless charging case. Google claims these are sweat- and water-resistant.

The Google Pixel Buds 2 come in four colours: Clearly White, Oh So Orange, Quite Mint, and Almost Black.
